East Beaches Health Fair a great venue for healthy choices; Hastings Hearing Centres informs seniors on impact of hearing lossVictoria Beach, Manitoba, September 25th, 2010: Hastings Hearing Centres participated in the East Beaches Health Fair recently, where local seniors could inform themselves on the benefits of proper hearing. The health fair was hosted by the Helping East Lake People Centre, a non-profit resource for seniors living independently in communities on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. It was a fabulous opportunity for residents of the inter-lake area to learn about healthy aging, and for Hastings to communicate its message surrounding the impact of hearing loss. Teresa Wall, a Hearing Instrument Specialist with Hastings, highlighted the fact that impaired hearing can severely affect a senior’s lifestyle by making them feel isolated and frustrated because of communication breakdowns: “Hearing loss can be detrimental to an older person’s family and social life, as they are no longer able to hardily participate in conversation.” When asked what most attendees were concerned with, Hastings Regional Manager, Brian Foster, admitted that most seniors were asking about their spouses and at-home communication problems: “I’m signing up my husband for a hearing test. I know he has a hearing loss,” said one person. Senator Sharon Carstairs was the featured speaker at the health fair. She talked about her vision of age-friendly communities across Canada, an initiative that is being implemented right now in many municipalities on the east side of the lake. Hastings Hearing Centres was invited back to the region in order to give a formal presentation on October 13th and provide a day of complimentary hearing tests on October 20th.
